Eric Goodman’s newest novel, Curveball, is a sequel to In Days of Awe, published by Knopf in 1991. One of the advantages of having some mileage on your literary tires is being able to revisit and reimagine characters across time. That’s exactly what Eric has done in Curveball, returning to Jewish Joe Singer and his family, 25 fictional years later. This time, Joe and Frannie’s son, Jess, a lefthander blessed with a plus-plus curve, is on the cusp of being promoted to Joe’s old team, the New York Mets. In addition to tremendous promise as a pitcher, Jess carries perhaps the most potent secret a professional athlete can possess: his sexual preference. In this exploration of masculinity, sports, and family in three generations of Singers, Eric returns to several favorite motifs: baseball, Jewishness, and gay sons. It’s also a feel-good love story. Curveball (2024) is a sequel to Eric Goodman's 1991 novel In Days of Awe. In the thirty-odd passing years between the novels our author has aged with his characters, encouraging an opportunity to reflect on what the characters have learned over their own 25-year story gap.

REVIEWS
“Fast and fun, Curveball, like its predecessor, In Days of Awe, is the best kind of sports story—gripping, poetic, and down-to-the wire. Even the non-fan will get swept away. This isn’t just a story about baseball...it’s about family and secrets and love, and about what’s passed on from one generation to the next. I don’t know anyone who writes about baseball like Eric Goodman. He’s got the savvy of an old pro, and the velocity of a young prospect.”
--Rajiv Joseph - Obie Award-winner and Pulitzer Prize finalist for Drama
“Eric Goodman’s Curveball dwells in its details in the most fascinating way—and it reaches far beyond its baseball setting to become a first-rate intergenerational drama as well as a delightful read.” --T.C. Boyle
